«The Journal of Ancient Architecture» riempie un vuoto nel panorama delle pubblicazioni scientifiche sul mondo antico e la storia dell’architettura, creando un luogo di discussione a livello internazionale dedicato espressamente all’architettura antica. Questa discussione può spaziare dall’analisi di singole strutture all’esplorazione di più ampi temi interculturali, contribuendo in maniera sempre informata al più ampio quadro di riferimento teorico e metodologico generale. Come tale, uno degli scopi della Rivista è mettere in evidenza non solo la complessità dell’architettura antica, ma anche i diversi riferimenti teorici e gli approcci che caratterizzano lo studio di questo multiforme campo di studio. Dal punto di vista geografico, la Rivista focalizza l’interesse sul Mediterraneo antico latamente inteso, inclusa l’Europa, il Vicino e Medio Oriente e il Nord Africa. In termini cronologici, la Rivista è anzitutto interessata al periodo compreso tra l’Età del Bronzo e la Tarda Antichità. Malgrado questa concentrazione, sono benvenuti i contributi relativi ad aree geografiche e periodi cronologici diversi, particolarmente se significativi da un punto di vista comparativo, nel primo caso, o relativi alla storia della ricezione, nel secondo. Gli articoli possono concentrarsi su singoli edifici o interi ambienti urbani, ma sempre inquadrando l’analisi entro una più ampia prospettiva storica, o possono anche affrontare questioni più ampie che rappresentano oggi il cuore dello studio dell’architettura antica, inclusi la teoria architettonica, la letteratura specializzata e le rappresentazioni antiche dell’architettura, gli architetti, la committenza, i materiali e le tecniche, le funzioni, le ricezioni antica e post-antica, il restauro e la storiografia.

«The Journal of Ancient Architecture» fills a gap in scholarly publications on the ancient world and architectural history by creating an international forum specifically designed for the discussion of the ancient built environment. This discussion ranges from the analysis of individual structures to the exploration of larger cross-cultural themes, but it is always expected to be informed by and contribute to a larger theoretical and methodological framework. As such, one of the goals of the Journal is to highlight not only the complexity of ancient architecture but also the varied theories and approaches that characterize the study of this diverse field. Geographically, the Journal centers on the ancient Mediterranean region, which is broadly defined, including Europe, western Asia, and North Africa. Chronologically, the Journal is primarily meant to cover its subject from the Bronze Age all the way up to Late Antiquity. Despite this focus, however, contributions pertaining to different geographical areas and periods are welcome, particularly if they are significant from a comparative perspective, in the first case, and are related to reception history, in the second. Articles may focus on individual buildings or urban environments, always framing the analysis within a larger historical perspective, or they may address larger issues that are core to the study of ancient architecture today, including architectural theory, specialized writing and depictions of architecture, architects, patronage, materials and techniques, functions, ancient and post-Antique reception, historic preservation, and historiography. * Editor in chief:
