The formal recognition and numeration of the outdoor economy in 2017 by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis highlighted the breadth and economic power of the outdoor industry (BEA, 2017-2023). For the first time, the outdoor industry has data to demonstrate economic and social contributions. However, the general public knows little about the breadth of the outdoor industry and what the entry points may be for potential professionals.

The Journal of Outdoor Recreation, Education, and Leadership is the only peer-reviewed journal published in the United States with a specific focus on the areas of outdoor recreation, education, and leadership. Through this collaborative effort between the Association for Outdoor Recreation and Education, the Wilderness Education Association, and the Western Kentucky University Research Foundation, the journal focuses on improving research and practice and reducing the disparity between the two in the represented disciplines.

The journal's mission is to improve outdoor recreation, education, and leadership through the publication and dissemination of peer-reviewed manuscripts. Publishing articles which contribute to the development of theory and practice is a guiding principle of the publication. The journal solicits high quality manuscripts from authors inside and outside of academia. Authors are encouraged to submit manuscripts (relevant to outdoor recreation, education, or leadership) in the following three categories: (1) Regular Papers, (2) Essays, Practices and Commentaries, (3) Research Notes and (4) Book Reviews. See more within Author Guidelines in the About tab.

The Journal of Outdoor Recreation, Education and Leadership is receiving a Journal Impact Factor (JIF)* for the first time in Clarivate’s 2023 Journal Citation Reports (2022 data). The Journal of Outdoor Recreation, Education and Leadership has a current JIF of 0.6.

(*The Journal Impact Factor (JIF) is a ratio which divides a journal’s received citations by a count of its published articles. It is calculated by Clarivate and reflects the yearly mean number of citations of articles published in the last two years in a given journal, as indexed by Clarivate's Web of Science.)
