Linguistics Vanguard is a new channel for high quality articles and innovative approaches in all major fields of linguistics. Getting “good” data in a pandemic, part 1: assessing the validity and quality of data collected remotely

Abstract

The articles presented in this special issue contribute to recent scholarship on remote data collection. The topics covered can be described in terms of two focal areas. The first focus is on the ways in which research can be adapted to remote data collection, and the second on the ways in which data collected remotely should be considered alongside data collected using “traditional” methods. The overarching epistemological question uniting these focal areas is whether remote data collection yields data of substantive quality. While varied in their aims and approaches, the studies presented suggest that remote data collection methods can be used on a par with traditional approaches, thus aligning with the findings of already existing scholarship on remote data collection methods. The detailed findings presented in the papers provide valuable methodological information for further development of methods in sociolinguistics and related areas. Though these studies originated in conditions when remote data collection was the only option, they reveal the suitability of remote data collection methods beyond the COVID-19 pandemic. Remote methods can get “good” data; the experience of conducting fieldwork during the pandemic, while a challenge, was a catalyst for creativity, innovation, and enrichment in the field.

Yiyang Xiang vowel quality: Comparability across two recording media

Abstract

Current events have necessitated the sacrifice of some degree of recording quality in order to reach inaccessible or faraway areas; for instance, using video conferencing software like Zoom for recording rather than traditional in-person microphone or sound booth recording. This then leads to the question: can Zoom-recorded data be used more or less interchangeably with standard recording procedures? The present research is an analysis of vowel acoustics in the Yiyang dialect of Xiang (Sinitic), comparing across two recording mediums: one online (Zoom) and another in person (sound booth). Researching Xiang varieties has been made increasingly difficult during the pandemic. This study analyzes two recordings retelling the events of the Pear Stories video, performed by a speaker of Yiyang Xiang (female, 24, college-educated), one recorded in the sound booth at the University of Hong Kong and another recorded through Zoom using a laptop microphone. Acoustic features analyzed include F1, F2, and F3. Preliminary findings suggest that while F1 is fairly comparable between the two recordings, the higher two formants are altered in ways that question the comparability of Zoom-recorded versus sound booth-recorded vowels. However, results improve considerably if formants are collected manually, suggesting that some recoverability is possible.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has shown that alternative methods of data collection are necessary to continue working in certain fields of linguistics. This is a challenge for (socio)phoneticians and phonologists who have to rely on good quality sound but cannot do fieldwork or gather recordings in a traditional manner. In this paper, I show that audio recordings made via social media can help alleviate this problem. To this end, I compared samples from five speakers of dialectal Spanish recorded in a laboratory setting and via a social media application (WhatsApp). The analysis of temporal and spectral characteristics of consonants in postvocalic position shows that recordings made via social media can be successfully used for at least some types of sociophonetic analysis. They also provide some additional advantages for researchers: ease of data collection, potentially large speech corpora, and access to authentic, naturalistic speech which is uninhibited by laboratory conditions or the presence of a researcher and a professional recording device.

Abstract

Online testing for behavioral research has become an increasingly used tool. Although more researchers have been using online data collection methods, few studies have assessed the replicability of findings for speech intelligibility tasks. Here we assess intelligibility in quiet and two noise-added conditions for several different accents of English (Midland American, Standard Southern British, Scottish, German-accented, Mandarin-accented, Japanese-accented, and Hindi-English bilingual). Participants were tested in person at a museum-based laboratory and online. Results showed little to no difference between the two settings for the easier noise condition and in quiet, but large performance differences in the most difficult noise condition with an advantage for the participants tested online. Technology-based variables did not appear to drive the setting effect, but experimenter presence may have influenced response strategy for the in-person group and differences in demographics could have provided advantages for the online group. Additional research should continue to investigate how setting, demographic factors, experimenter presence, and motivational factors interact to determine performance in speech perception experiments.

Brazilian Portuguese-Russian (BraPoRus) corpus: automatic transcription and acoustic quality of elderly speech during the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract

This article presents the Brazilian Portuguese-Russian (BraPoRus) corpus, whose goal is to collect, analyze, and preserve for posterity the spoken heritage Russian still used today in Brazil by approximately 1,500 elderly bilingual heritage Russian–Brazilian Portuguese speakers. Their unique 100-year-old variety of moribund Russian is disappearing because it has not been passed to their descendants born in Brazil. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we remotely collected 170 h of speech samples in heritage Russian from 26 participants ( M age = 75.7 years) in naturalistic settings using Zoom or a phone call. To estimate the quality of collected data, we focus on two methodological challenges, automatic transcription and acoustic quality of remote recordings. First, we find that among commercially available transcription programs, Sonix far outperforms Google Transcribe and Vocalmatic on the measure of word error rate (WER). Second, we also establish that the acoustic quality of the remote recordings was adequate for intonational and speech rate analysis. Moreover, this remote method of collecting and analyzing speech samples works successfully with elderly bilingual participants who speak a heritage language different from their dominant societal language, and it can become a new norm when face-to-face communication with elderly participants is not possible.

Abstract

This paper presents a remote method used for engaging teenagers as citizen sociolinguists within the research project Teen Speak in Estonia. The project, launched in January 2020, aims to investigate young people’s language by creating the first systematic dual corpus of Estonian teenagers’ spoken language and text messaging. Previously, youth language in Estonia has not been the subject of much research. Yet scholarly attention to teenage language usage has been on the rise internationally, with corpora compiled in English and several other languages. The article describes the process of recruiting and training participants, as well as adjustments made to data collection in connection with the outbreak of COVID-19 and the restrictions which followed. While the pandemic did modestly interfere with the participatory approach, the data collection was successfully carried out, thanks primarily to well-networked and dedicated 9- to 18-year-old participants. Notwithstanding a gender imbalance, the corpus of 97 h of speech and nearly 60,000 words of text messages will facilitate research into Estonian teenagers’ Estonian–English codeswitching and other linguistic features, across two registers. The remote method is recommended for use elsewhere, especially in places where mutual trust prevails, and teenagers claim a fair amount of independence, responsibility and facility with online applications.
